THE FULL-MOON IN SEPTEMBER

The September full-moon lights up
A bright cross in the darkening sky
Four silvery beams of limbs
To shone upon the flooded city
On the path of the onrushing Caribbean storm
To whisper all night
Upon the deflated hearts of the bewildered
If we could curb the course of the wind and water
But now
Withstand the night of darkness embracing hope
Will send provisions of care on the wings of morning
The September full-moon beams on the Red-Cross
And Salvation Army vehicles all night over thousands of miles
To help prepare breakfast tables and set sleeping beds.
His two hands and two feet oncoming across time and space

GRANDMA KNITS FORWARD

Grandma is knitting a sweater
With blue yarn and two needles
On television screen
Red hot lava is flowing down under active volcano
Islanders struggle on the broken wooden bridge
Grandma continues knitting with eyes on screen
Hands Picking loops in and out between horror and reality
Occasionally twisting to make a pattern
Mixing pieces of memory with presence
Going back in time to fix missteps sometimes
But always knitting forward
With only one long yarn of time until the job is done

9월의 보름달은 외 1편

9월의 보름달은
은빛 팔다리를 사뿐히 뻗어
빛의 십자가를
무한한 하늘 공간에 띄운다.
이 밤이 새도록
저 카리비안 큰 바람에
쓰러져 물에 잠긴 도시를
비추기 위하여
땅과 하늘의 지변을 막을 수 있다면
하지만 지금은
희망을 안고 밤을 이기길
아침날개에 사랑의 손길을 실어 보내리.
9월의 보름달은
은밀한 빛으로 내려와 적십자기를 달고
천 마일을 달리며 구세군의 아침상을
차려 올린다. 따뜻한 잠자리를 펼친다.
시공간을 넘어 다가오는 그의 두 손과 두 발
앞을 향한 할머니의 뜨개질
할머니는 스웨터를 짠다.
파란실과 두개의 뜨게 바늘로
텔레비전에는 뜨거운 용암이 활화산
아래서 사방으로 흘러내리고
섬사람들은 부서진 나무다리위로 건너간다.
눈은 텔레비전을 바라보며 계속 뜨개질을 한다.
두 손은 공포와 현실 사이에서 실코를 찾으며
무늬를 만들기 위해 실을 거꾸로 엮기도 한다.
가끔 기억 쪼가리들을 현실과 섞기도 하고
잘못 짠 코를 고치기 위해 시간을 거슬러 올라 갈 때도 있지만
할머니는 계속 앞을 향해 뜨개질을 한다.
단 하나의 긴 시간의 줄로 작품이 완성 될 때까지
1946년 경상북도 영주에서 출생. 이화여대 약대 졸업.『해외문학』(2004) 신인상 당선으로 데뷔. 첫 시집:『인동넝쿨 핀 길』(2009)『좋은 하루 되세요』(2017) 출간. 현재 Veterans Hospital 약사로 근무.『The War Cry』지에 영시 발표. ｢해외문인협회」(미국)회원
