Ghostly faces stare
from sepia eyes, imprisoned
in walled mahogany frames.
Grim lips speak of mourning.
Families lost to typhus, raging fevers
ravages of the expedition west.
Women in stiff gray dresses,
men wearing midnight suits
gaze in envy, while we
reclining on crimson couches,
drink coffee from porcelain mugs,
map the rest of our day.

유령 같은 얼굴들이 응시한다.
세피아 눈에서, 투옥된
마호가니 액자 안에서.
단호한 입술들은 애도에 대해 말한다.
티푸스, 격렬한 발열에 잃은 가족들
서부 개척의 참화.
뻣뻣한 회색 드레스를 입은 여성들,
남색 정장을 입은 남성들
우리를 부러운 시선으로 바라본다, 우리가
진홍색 소파에 기대,
자기 머그잔에서 커피를 마시며,
우리의 남은 하루를 계획하는 것을.
