THE QUIET
Susan Lembo Balik
I love the quiet
of the woods on a weekday
of my kitchen at 4 a.m.
when I’m perched on a stool writing
of a roomful of yogis
on brightly colored mats meditating
There, I slip into the quiet
like a cozy sweater or a faded pair of jeans
But this small town quiet was different—it followed
me like a swarm of gnats into the Iowa nursing home
where I walked past bunches of purple lilacs, anticipating
the visit with my father-in-law
where I welcomed the drone of the TV in his room, a distraction
from the sharp angles of his face, skin stretched over bone
where he lay dying in a hospital bed, his once able farmer’s body
now limp like a spent corn husk
Susan Lembo Balik is Associate Director of Cultural Affairs at Passaic County Community College, in Paterson, New Jersey. An animal rights and environmental activist, her poems have appeared in the Paterson Literary Review, Lips, Paddlefish, and Tiferet: A Journal of Spiritual Literature. Her first book of poetry will be published in 2014.

숲속의 고요함,
새벽 4시 글을 쓰며 앉아있는
내 부엌의 고요함,
환한 색 매트 위에 명상을 하는
요가 수행자들의 고요함이 나는 좋다.
거기서 나는 아늑한 스웨터 같은 혹은
색 바랜 청바지 같은 침묵 속으로 빠져든다.
그러나 이 작은 마을의 정적은 달랐다. ―그것은
보랏빛 라일락 나무들을 지나 찾아가
시아버지 방안의 TV의 윙윙거리던 소리와
날카롭게 각이 진 그의 얼굴
뼈를 간신히 덮고 있는 그의 피부 가죽을 만났던,
한때 건장했던 농부의 몸이 이제는
다 갉아먹고 남은 처참한 옥수수자루처럼
병원 침대 위에 누워 죽어가시던
아이오와 요양원의 각다귀 떼처럼
나를 따라다닐 뿐.
