When I stepped on dirt and sand

a sound that broke the silence, like a scream

It was an afternoon

when beneath a cloudless sky

a crow elegantly flew high in the air

Flowers not even named

have bloomed abundantly

in the land of desert

Flowers smaller than sesame seeds

as adorable as kittens

shake in the sandy wind

as if making eye contact or rubbing against each other

Flowers that blossom only to be stepped on

blooming in a low place at the end of the earth

without insisting even once on their red hue

only visible

when looking while kneeling with head bent

Today, I almost

ended tender lives

The moment I touched that thin blood vessel

that was hardly a stem

a hot, wild summer

suddenly awoke

like a salamander

in my body

난쟁이 꽃 외 1편

흙모래들 저벅저벅 구둣발에 밟히자

적막을 깨는 소리, 문득 비명처럼

구름 한 점 없는 하늘에

까마귀 한 마리 우아하게

고공행진을 하는 오후였습니다.

이름조차 붙여지지 못한 꽃들이

사막의 땅에

수두룩이 피어나 있었습니다.

깨알보다 작고

아기 고양이처럼 앙증맞은 꽃들이

서로 눈을 맞추듯이 비벼주듯이

모래바람에 흔들리고 있었습니다

무릎 꿇고 고개 숙여 들여다보아야

비로소 보이는,

땅 끝 가장 낮은 곳에 피어나

붉은 제 빛 한번 주장하지 못하고

밟혀지기 위해 피어나는 꽃들

오늘 하마터면

그 여린 숨통을 끊어버릴 뻔 했습니다

줄기랄 것도 없는

가느다란 모세혈관을 만져보는 순간

내 몸에는

뜨겁고 황막한 여름이

도마뱀처럼

화들짝 화들짝 깨어났습니다

After marriage, I was battered for 10 years

My husband is a good man

The problem was night

his knees and feet beneath the blankets

A sports maniac, whenever he fell asleep

a ball would roll like a spider climbing the bedroom walls

that he needed to steal from the opposing team

The scream of Red Devils echoing from the full crowd

made him fire up scarlet

His restless legs

look for the golden opportunity to make a goal all night long

When his sound feet, his damned feet shoot!

the place to which the ball flies

is not the opponents' goal

or the 30 year old body at the height of its sexual drive

but everywhere on my weak body--

my stomach which would carry our two children

weak shins that easily break

the back that spat out English, the mother tongue, and sweat

and the jacaranda-like waist

Do you think I never got up in sleep without thinking

to aim a free kick at that forward?

In the second half of my forties, the only thing I could think of

was to switch fields

escaping the narrow fantasy of a double, In-N-Out Burger's

Double Double,

to king size, as wide and long as a California beach, California king

where two could eat but neither would know if one retreated

On the king size bed as wide as a soccer field

he rolls around, shouts, and aims the kick of glory

into the air, shoot!

The emptiness to his left expands and bounces up

결혼하고 십년이나 얻어맞고 살았죠

남편은 착한 사람이었어요

문제는 밤이었지요

이불 속 그의 발 다리 무릎이 문제였죠

스포츠 광이었던 그는 잠만 들면 스멀스멀

침실 벽을 타고 거미가 기어오르듯 공이 굴러간다나요

상대편 수비수로부터 공을 빼앗아 와야 한다나요

관중석 가득 메아리쳐 오는 붉은 악마들의 함성

그를 붉게 타오르게 하는,

안절부절 그의 두 다리는

밤새도록 골문을 향해 황금의 기회를 엿보지요

멀쩡한 그의 발이, 벼락 맞을 그의 발이 슛!

공이 날아간 곳은 상대편 골문도

삼십 살 절정의 그곳도 아닌 이곳저곳

부실한 나의 몸 언저리였어요

장차 우리의 두 아이가 들어설 배와

부러지지 않을 만큼 약한 정강이

영어도 모국어도 땀도 뱉어낸 등판

자카란다*같은 허리였지요

나도 모르게 벌떡 일어나

저 웬수 같은 공격수를 향해 프리킥을 안 날려본 줄 아세요?

마흔 후반전, 결국 생각해낸 것은

필드를 교체하는 것 뿐이겠더라구요

둘이 먹다가 하나가 퇴각 당해도 모를, 인 앤 아웃의* 더블더블

비좁은 더블 사이즈의 환상에서 벗어나

킹사이즈, 캘리포니아 해안 도로같이 넓고 길게 뻗은

캘리포니아 킹으로

그는 축구장처럼 넓어진 킹사이즈 침대 위에서

밤새 마음껏 구르고 소리치며 허공을 향해

영광의 킥을 날립니다, 슛!

그의 왼편 허공이 무참히 늘어났다 튕겨져 오릅니다

*보통은 ‘킹’이 제일 큰데, 이보다 더 크고 넓은 침대 사이즈 (캘리포니아 킹)이라고 말함‘

*캘리포니아에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 꽃나무인데 가로수로 심어져, 5.6월에는 거리를 보랏빛으로 물들게 하면서 환상적인 분위기를 자아냄 (아카시아처럼 송이송이 달림)
